The Clare Valley wine region is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions, with a winemaking history dating back 150 years. The first vineyards were planted by European settlers in the 1830’s. Today there are almost 5000 hectares under vine.
The Clare Valley is an expanse of sweeping gullies and rolling hills, where row upon row of elegant vines sit beside Australian bush and farmland.
The climate is moderately continental, with warm days and cool to cold nights during the growing season, meaning grape growers have the favourable climate conditions for most wine varieties. Climate together with geography and geology create a terroir that is perfect for producing world-class wines.
Traditionally famed for Riesling, as of 2014, Shiraz grapes made up of the highest percentage of planted vines, accounting for 35%.
